Jeffrey Thorpe : Executive Member (QLD), MAGA National Executive

Jeff first came upon MAGA when he was a Sydney based club and touring musician in the wonderful club days of the 1970’s where sight reading charts on an almost daily basis was the common fare of the professional musician.

They were wonderful days and musicians knew that charts written by ‘MAGA Members’ would always be professional and reliable.

Jeff has been a touring muso backing many ‘names’ along the way and a musical director of Sydney Club acts including Margaret Young, and the first MD of Eddie Youngblood (of MO Awards fame).

He enjoys the precision of working in pit bands for musicals and has played in about 50 on a range of instruments to date.

His passions are music education, arranging, being a multi- instrumentalist and composition. He received a 2001 Australia Day Award from Education Queensland for his work in the school system and continues to promote the growth of young musicians through the mentoring program within the Bribie Big Band.

Jeff has written a number of musicals (and is currently writing a new one), a top 40 hit, four music textbooks (one was a best seller) and has 4 works published in the U.K. and 6 in New York. Works have been performed in USA, UK, NZ and Australia.

After retiring from education, Jeff was a co-founder of the Bribie Big Band, (now in its 12th year) where he continues as Musical Director, player and the sole arranger. To date he has written 103 arrangements and /or compositions for the band and yes, he still remembers his first arrangement (1972).
